Colm Gallagher: Bio

Colm Gallagher is one of Ireland's finest song writers. His songs have been recorded by Christy Moore, Liam Clancy, Tommy Makem, Will Millar, Gordon Bok, Evans & Doherty, Celtic Folk, The Kilfenora Ceili Band, Diarmuid O'Leary and the Bards, P.J. Murrihy, Dermot O'Brien, Johnnie McEvoy, Des Regan, Mark Kent, Gordon Belsher, Brendan Nolan, Blackthorn, Charlie King, Carnsies and Mary White.

In his book "One Voice” Christy Moore says that" when singing Colm's song " The Reel in the Flickering Light" I hear the audience sigh in wonderment at the pictures, I hear squeals of delight at the mad fun, this story of Colm's is such a wonderful fantasy". Christy also states" Colm has written a fine body of unique songs", one of which is "The Great St Patrick's Dance in San Fernando" which Christy recently recorded. In a personal testimonial, Liam Clancy stated, "Tommy Makem and I have been singing your song "I Held a Lady”, "it is a beaut".  Tommy Makem was a great admirer of Colm"swriting having recorded four of his songs. "My Father Loves Nikita Khrushchev", "I Held a Lady", "If I was a Dog" and "Bridey Murphy and the Kamikaze Pilot". For many years the signature tune of P.J. Murrihy's Band (off shoot of the Kilfenora Ceili Band) was Colm's haunting "Belfast Town".

As a performer Colm has told Ireland's story in clubs, on concert stages and on Radio and TV in the U.S.  His name is forever identified as the founding musician of the world famous Molly Malone's Pub in Los Angeles where Colm played musical host to the Hollywood glitterati.

The depth of Colm's writing has intensified over the years and the scope has broadened.  This is now on full display in his new album "Reel in the Flickering Light"  From the Caribbean inflected  "Easy Money", through the devilish humor of "If I was a dog" and "My Ex Wife's Heart",  to the chilling abstractions of the "House of the Sorrowful Soldier",  Colm takes us on a wild and demanding ride. The common thread running through these remarkably diverse songs is an Irishman's  journey through the new world.  It is hard to imagine a more romantic song than "Bella Marie".  Included here is the original version of Colm’s signature tune the oft recorded  " Reel in the Flickering Light".  In the George Jones tribute "Sing it like you mean it" we hear echoes  of Carolan's " Maire Dhall".  A standout song on this CD is Colm's modern day interpretation of the spirit of "Ronnie Delany". "Silver Star" and "Sandy" are gems in their own right.  For all who want to hear a master wordsmith at work, this CD is a must.

Colm is joined here by some of Los Angeles's finest musicians. Howard Deere, Carlos Battey, Denise Gentilini, Ken O'Malley, Chris Anderson, Robbyn Kirmsee, Brendan McGrath, Craig Stull, Chad Watson, David Ferguson and Bobbye Hall. The spectacular production is the work of Mary White at Q P Sound.
